REDSCALE FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

I’ve been re-exploring my old Canon SLR. There’s something reassuring about the whir of that film rolling round, and it’s been fun to experiment with redscale and other “novelty”, lomography-esque film types

Possibly my favourite composition here, but the lighting feels dark and the detail of the people is missing

I quickly snapped this image in the moment and did not have time to over-expose.

This image was overexposed against the camera’s light meter by a stop but still the image has come out quite dark

Redscale film is just normal 35mm colour film that is reversed - ie take the film out of the canister (in a dark bag), cut it at the end - then flip the film over. Sticky tape the end back on and respool the film into the canister before loading into the camera as normal.

I didn’t do this - I just bought the film pre-prepared from Nik & Trick, a specialist camera retailer. And because it is just colour film, you can process it locally using C41 processing

This year’s Pavilion by Junya Ishigami provided perhaps too much darkness and the interior sections appear overly dark and the detail is missing
